The tour will continue at the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LAMMC), Institute of Agriculture, which is located at the very heart of Lithuania. LAMMC is a state research institute. The Centre’s strategic objective is to conduct R&D in the fields of agronomy and forestry, and the related fields of ecology and environmental sciences, biology, biophysics, botany, and zoology. The experimental fields of Grass Breeding and Plant Nutrition, and Agroecology Departments will be visited and the main scientific activities will be presented.

The tour will continue with a visit to the AB Linas Agro. AB Linas Agro is one of the companies of AB Linas Agro Group. The Group currently operates the largest agricultural and food production companie group in the Baltics, comprising 69 subsidiaries and two associates, and employing around 5000 people. Group is one of the largest exporters of grain and have a network of modern grain storage facilities in Lithuania and Latvia. The Group is one of the leaders in Lithuania in supplying production to farmers – certified seeds, fertilizers, plant protection products, and agricultural machinery.

‘Linas Agro’ invites the participants of the symposium to visit one of its agricultural companies Labūnava, where, together with LAMMC researchers, smart farming system Geoface has been launched aiming at designing accurate fertilizer maps as well as generating variable nitrogen fertilizers rate maps. The GeoFace agricultural management software uses satellite data and interprets it according to a unique algorithm. Using this software, it will be possible to clearly see historical data and when to work in the fields. Crop rotation in the field of study consists of alfalfa in 2019-2020, winter wheat in 2021, winter oilseed rape in 2022 and winter wheat in 2023. There are also some major agrotechnological differences between the winter wheat production technology of LAMMC IA and Labūnava ŽŪB: every 4 years the fields are fertilized after harvest with bird manure, crop rotation involves more legumes, different phosphorus and potassium fertilizer rates, application of urea next to the seed etc. Why the company’s yields are higher is a key question that will be answered by LAMMC IA scientists.
